The monadic laws must hold:

  • (x>>=f)>>=g = x>>=fun x' -> (f x'>>=g)
  • return a >>= f = f a
  • x>>=return = x

As well as the following identities:

  • x >> y = x >>= fun () -> y
  • map f x = x >>= fun x' -> f x'
